200 Years of the Erie Canal — Let’s Celebrate with a Sweet Twist!
Can you believe the Erie Canal is turning 200 this year? As someone who calls North Tonawanda home, this milestone feels extra special. The canal isn’t just a piece of history—it’s part of our city’s heartbeat. It helped shape the place where I live, work, and where Platter’s Chocolate Factory gets to spread a little sweetness every day!
Back when the Erie Canal first opened, it transformed North Tonawanda into a bustling hub of energy and opportunity putting our great city on the map. It brought people together, boosted businesses, and turned the Tonawanda’s into a gathering place where goods flowed just like the water through those locks. I love knowing that the same spirit that built this city is alive today in our shops, businesses, neighborhoods, and friendly faces I have the privilege of seeing every day.
So, how are we celebrating 200 years of this iconic canal? With treats, of course! This summer, we’ve cooked up some fun, canal-inspired goodies at Platter’s:
Erie Pop Palmer: Think of it as summer in a cup—half iced tea, half lemonade, plus a double burst of blueberry! It’s bright, refreshing, and totally inspired by the sparkling waters and vibrant journey of the Erie Canal.
Canal Rocks Sundae: Dig in! This one’s a tribute to the canal’s stony path—rich vanilla custard, warm hot fudge, and crunchy chocolate candy rocks. It’s a deliciously rugged ride!
And while you’re out celebrating the summer months, here are a few more ways to make the most of the Erie Canal Bicentennial right here in North Tonawanda:
- Slow Spokes – North Tonawanda — Take a weekly leisure bicycle ride around the city. Starts and ends at Fattey Beer in the Wurlitzer Building.
- Cruisin the Wurlitzer – Take in a weekly car cruise featuring over 6.5 acres of cruisers from all over New York and Canada, showcasing everything from classic cars and hot rods to race cars, muscle cars, military vehicles, and more!
- Catch a Show at the Riviera Theatre — A historic treasure right in the heart of town. So many amazing tribute bands. You can even grab a great meal before the show on Webster Street.
- Walk or Bike the Erie Canalway Trail — Soak up the canal views and get some fresh air. This is a great way to spend time with your girlfriends.
- Enjoy a Summer Concert at Gateway Harbor Park — Music, food trucks, and canal views = perfect summer night. Need I say more?
So come celebrate with us! Whether you’re a lifelong local like or just passing through, let’s raise a spoon (or a cup) to 200 years of connection, community, and canal pride. Stop by Platter’s this summer—because history tastes even sweeter when you celebrate it together!
